My art reflects my thoughts and beliefs about the journey through life
toward the eternal dwelling place.
As I hear and observe birds interacting with each other around the lake
from my studio, I think of spiritual aspects of interactions among
people and God’s hidden plans for each one of us in our lives.
Using the images from nature like birds, living organisms floating in
the ocean, or blossoms carried by the afternoon sea breeze, I try to
convey the sense of hope and inner peace.
My crystalline glazed porcelain works are hand built from rolled slabs
or extruded clay and bisque fired to cone 05. These are brushed with
high zinc glazes and fired to cone 9 (2290 degrees F) in an electric
kiln. After glazes are melted at high temperature, zinc and silica in
the glazes are combined to form crystal seeds. These grow on the
surface of the work during the specific cooling and holding cycle,
creating unique surfaces with shimmering crystal blossoms. Various
colors and designs are achieved by layering different
colors and thicknesses of glazes and by controlling the firing cycle.
